With the hundreds of species of freshwater gastropods, even if a mistake, this is indeed a small error rate. In reality, until someone rigorously studies these pleurocerids (and I do not mean using antiquated techniques on an extremely limited sample of the species) we will not really know. Last time your main point was also nit picking, questioning the reported distribution of a common snail, in an article calling attention to the plight of pleurocerids. And you threw in an allegation of dishonesty as well. These posts say more about your personality than anything else.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1925453458905823877.post-31603119426329734092014-03-10T01:54:44.733-04:002014-03-10T01:54:44.733-04:00AFS is increasingly becoming an activist organizat...AFS is increasingly becoming an activist organization. I would not be unhappy to see their role in things like defining names be moved over to a more neutral professional society like ASIH.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1925453458905823877.post-86223669526738644312014-03-08T00:42:51.517-05:002014-03-08T00:42:51.517-05:00Good post. The ESA is under assult and poorly supported assertions of rarity will only provide ammunition to those who would like to weaken this important legislation.Andy Turnerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02612589595135139837noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1925453458905823877.post-19340136601158468252014-03-05T21:47:50.147-05:002014-03-05T21:47:50.147-05:00In your zealous rush to accuse Johnson et al. of p...In your zealous rush to accuse Johnson et al. of plagiarism, did you overlook the statement (one which made it through peer-review, and I assume your charge of plagiarism as the editors of Fisheries have not redacted the article) where the authors state in regards to pleurocerid taxonomy "...Interim taxonomic rearrangements (e.g., Dillon 2011) are like inadequate. Consequently, herein we retain the Turgeon et al. (1998) classification until a synthetic and comprehensive taxonomy of pleurocerids is constructed."?

I think most of your readers, and the vast majority of systematists/evolutionary biologists, would agree that synomymizing Elimia and Pleurocera based on the data in Dillon 2011 was quite premature...as were other taxonomic revisions in that paper. I just hate it when I see the mighty residents of academia's towers lower themselves to mix with the unwashed masses, especially when it comes to conservation issues. Leave that work to the peasants!

Bravo again on this post! And what a magnificent medium to use for screaming at the top of your lungs for all to hear! Who needs peer-reviewed articles to criticize , rebuke, or, heaven forbid, test the hypotheses of those who squander their days away thinking about conservation issues?

Clearly the misanthropes so consistently ridiculed on this magnificent blog are not worthy to even crawl on the ground people like Darwin, Goodrich, and Dillon walk on!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1925453458905823877.post-18569093047625626422014-03-05T18:58:01.560-05:002014-03-05T18:58:01.560-05:00having been raised on Wilson & Brown's (19...having been raised on Wilson & Brown's (1953) trashing of the classical subspecies as being nothing more than geographic variation, my contention would be that a subspecies would have to be a real taxon, as indicated by increased variability in the hybrid zone between subspecies - Schueler, Frederick W., and James D. Rising. 1976. Phenetic evidence of natural hybridization. Systematic Zoology 25:283-289. But I haven't been in the academic mainstream to defend this idea, and I suppose it's been universally forgotten in the furious onset of the phyolgenetic species concept.Fred Schuelerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02413290982310369659noreply@blogger.com
